Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign said Friday that it raised $310 million in July, more than double the $138.7 million that former President Trump and his affiliated committees said they raised during the same month.
Why it matters: Democrats had been bracing for a decline in fundraising following President Biden's shaky June debate performance, but Harris' newly-launched campaign generated a massive influx of donations.
- The Trump campaign said Thursday that it had $327 million in cash on hand, while the Harris campaign said Friday that it had $377 million in the bank.
- The Harris campaign touted its cash on hand as the largest war chest ever at this point in the election cycle.
Driving the news: The July fundraising totals for both campaigns underscore the dramatic events during the month that upended the 2024 race.
- Trump, who survived an attempted assassination last month, saw an increase from the approximately $112 million the campaign and allied groups raised in June.
- Harris' July fundraising haul was also a massive increase from June, when President Biden was still the nominee and raised $127 million.
State of play: Harris sparked an influx of donations immediately after she launched her campaign, raising $200 million during the first week alone.
- The campaign said in its Friday announcement that two-thirds of its July fundraising came from first-time donors and that 94% of all of the Harris campaign's donations were under $200.
- The campaign also said that July was the best grassroots fundraising month in presidential history.
Reality check: Both campaigns' numbers are self-reported and can't be independently verified until they file their campaign finance reports later this month.
What they're saying: "This is a history-making haul for a candidate who will make history this November," Harris for President Campaign Manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez said in the announcement.
- "The tremendous outpouring of support we've seen in just a short time makes clear the Harris coalition is mobilized, growing, and ready to put in the work to defeat Trump this Novembers."
The other side: The Trump campaign said in its announcement that the July numbers "reflect continued momentum with donors at every level and provide the resources for the final 96 days until victory November 5th."
