Simone Biles leads Team USA in qualifying, despite calf pain

• Jade Carey, Biles' teammate, fell on the floor, ending her hopes to defend her gold from Tokyo in the event final. She confirmed in a post to X that expressed thanks for all the support she'd received that she hadn't "been feeling the best the past few days," but gave everything she had Sunday.

Driving the news: The U.S. competed in the second of five subdivisions on Saturday and topped the field of early teams. Biles had the top all-around score, and the high mark in three of four the individual apparatuses.

• Carey rebounded from her fall with a strong vault performance, where she finished second behind Biles among those who have competed thus far.
• Biles, defending 2020 all-around champion Sunisa Lee and Jordan Chiles finished in the top three spots for the all-around; However, only two gymnasts from each country can advance to the finals.

Zoom in: Team USA coach Cécile Canqueteau-Landi told reporters that she experienced "a little pain in her calf" — an injury that first cropped up a couple of weeks ago, but had subsided until today.

• Asked whether it got better or worse during today's competition, Landi told Axios: "She felt better at the end."
• Landi told reporters that Biles did not consider withdrawing or adjusting her routines.
• Team USA passed by reporters without answering questions.

What's next: The U.S. women will next compete in the team final on Tuesday. The women's all-around competition is slated for Thursday.
