Homeland chair joins calls for Secret Service director to step down

• The calls became bipartisan Saturday when Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-Pa.) came out as the first congressional Democrat to call for Cheatle to step down.
• Boyle said Cheatle should "resign immediately," citing "unacceptable operational failures" surrounding the assassination attempt on former President Trump.

Zoom out: President Biden's decision to withdraw Sunday from the presidential race is likely for now to overshadow calls for Cheatle to step aside.

• Cheatle is scheduled to testify Monday morning before the House Oversight Committee where she's likely to face tough questions from lawmakers of both parties.

Driving the news: In a statement obtained Sunday by Axios, Green cited an array of concerns about Cheatle's record and ability to protect leaders going forward.

• He called Cheatle's argument that the Secret Service could not position counter-snipers in the location of the shooter because of the angle of the roof "absurd, unacceptable and obviously unfounded."

• Green also accused Cheatle of misleading the Homeland panel by claiming Trump's detail never requested more security, citing Washington Post and New York Times reports Saturday to the contrary.
• Green blasted Cheatle for placing "blame at the feet" of local law enforcement.

The other side: Cheatle acknowledged the agency"failed" at its "no-fail mission" to protect former presidents during a briefing with House members last week.
