RNC ratings on first night down 21% from 2016

• Trump also announced Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance as his running mate on Monday.

Zoom in: A total of 12 broadcast and cable networks showed the Milwaukee event live from 10pm to 11pm ET on Monday, when the biggest speeches occurred. That dropped to 11 broadcast and cable networks on the second night of the convention Tuesday.

The latest: Viewership also dropped 18% from Monday to Tuesday to 14.81 million viewers. That drop was in line with day No. 2 trends from 2016 and 2020, which drew 14.84 million and 14.76 million viewers, respectively.

• Fox News drew the most viewers among the major cable and broadcast news networks on both days, with 6.85 million on Monday and 5.3 million on Tuesday.

By the numbers: On Monday, ABC had 2.28 million viewers. NBC had 2.24 million. CBS had 1.82 million. MSNBC had 1.27 million, and CNN had 1.11 million.

• On Tuesday, NBC had 2.29 million viewers. ABC had 2.081 million. CBS had 1.61 million. CNN had 968,000, and MSNBC had 798,000.
• The vast majority of viewers — 75% on Monday and 78% on Tuesday —were over 55-years-old, which is common for TV news events.

• Tuesday's event featured speeches from former Trump Republican presidential nominee rivals, including Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, Former UN ambassador Nikki Haley, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy.

What we're watching: Vance is slated to speak at the RNC on Wednesday, marking his first major national address as a political figure. Trump is scheduled to speak Thursday.
