RFK Jr. to get Secret Service protection after Trump rally shooting

The big picture: "In light of this weekend's events, the president has directed me to work with the Secret Service to provide protection to Robert Kennedy Jr.," Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said at a White House press briefing Monday.

• "Our entire administration is grateful that former President Trump is okay," Mayorkas added, thanking Secret Service agents for their work and extending condolences to the family of Corey Comperatore, a rally attendee who was killed in the shooting.
• "We are in a heightened and very dynamic threat environment," Mayorkas added.
• Trump was given increased security before and after the rally shooting, in anticipation of being officially named the Republican Party's 2024 presidential nominee, he added.

What they're saying: "Thank you, President Biden, for extending me Secret Service protection," Kennedy said in a statement.

• Kennedy also thanked the security firm Gavin de Becker & Associates for "keeping me safe for the past 15 months of my presidential campaign."

State of play: The Trump shooting spurred a Congressional effort to bolster Kennedy's security, with a bipartisan group of lawmakers vowing Sunday to introduce a bill to bolster protection for Kennedy, Trump and President Biden.

• Trump weighed in on the matter earlier Monday, saying it was "imperative" that Kennedy be granted Secret Service protection.
• "Given the history of the Kennedy Family, this is the obvious right thing to do!" he said.
