Shari Redstone, the media mogul who last week struck a deal to sell Paramount Global, will for the first time tonight see her name listed on a Broadway playbill as a producer, she told Axios.
State of play: Redstone has been quietly co-producing a new psychological thriller, Job, for the past few months. She hopes to work on more shows following the sale of Paramount.
- The off-Broadway hit, which features a young woman wrestling with her identity after being placed on leave from a Big Tech job, debuts Monday on Broadway for its first opening preview. It officially opens on July 30th.
Flashback: In an interview, Redstone described fond memories of going to see Broadway and off-Broadway productions with her family growing up, including "Fiddler on the Roof," "Zorba" and "The Fantasticks." She recalled singing songs from "The Fantasticks" while her father played the piano as a kid.
- "You know, somebody in my life once said content is king," Redstone said, referring to a famous quote from her late father Sumner Redstone.
- "The reality is content doesn't just exist on screens. It exists in theater. It exists in life. So this isn't a giant leap forward. It's really a continuation of doing what I love," she added.
Behind the scenes: Redstone landed a producer role with "Job" after being introduced to one of the show's lead producers, Alex Levy, a speechwriter for Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) who now runs a communications firm that counts Redstone among its clients.
- Levy, a four-time Tony award-winner, has produced seven Broadway shows since 2019 in addition to his communications work, including four Tony-winning productions, "Company" (Best Revival of a Musical, 2022) "Parade" (Best Revival of a Musical, 2023), "A Strange Loop" (Best Musical, 2022) and "Stereophonic" (Best Play, 2024).
- He is co-leading the production of "Job" with Hannah Getts, a film and TV executive. One of the show's most salient themes is about the impact of social media on mental health, which Redstone noted was "an important social issue."
- Redstone said she's excited to help give the play visibility and spread its message. She was touting the show to peers at Allen & Co's ultra-exclusive annual conference for business leaders in Sun Valley, Idaho last weekend.
Zoom in: Redstone was inspired to work with Levy after having seen two of his shows, "Parade" and "Just For Us," both of which touched on themes of anti-Semitism, she said.
- "I think what really impressed me about Alex is he creates great content that has an impact," Redstone said. "To be honest, I love theater, but this was about being able to work with someone who I had a lot of respect for, who I really enjoy, and who creates content that makes a difference."
The big picture: The sale of Paramount Global marks the end of an era for Hollywood and the Redstone family, which has controlled Paramount's biggest assets, such as CBS, Viacom, and Paramount Pictures, for decades.
- "You know, my family will always love Paramount. It will always be a part of our lives," Redstone said when asked to reflect on the sale.
- "My father created a great company. He put together a combination of terrific assets, but I think it was time for my family to move on and to create our own legacy," she added.
- "And frankly, with everything that's going on in the world right now, I want that legacy to be around philanthropy, around fighting hate, around civic and moral leadership, and that's what I'm really excited about."
What's next: Redstone's Broadway foray is part of her broader commitment to impact work and philanthropy, especially around projects that fight anti-Semitism and bolster civic leadership.
- "I saw anti-Semitism on the rise several years ago," Redstone explained, but after October 7, "It just became my life."
- "You'll see me doing a lot of work with high schools, with universities, in Israel — bringing different communities together," she said.
