After the shooting at former President Trump's rally on Saturday, authorities took 18 witnesses to a building on the Butler Farm Show grounds, Axios has learned.
- The witnesses were interviewed for several hours by investigators from the Secret Service, Homeland Security, the FBI and the Pennsylvania state police, according to David James Stewart, one of the witnesses.
- The location where witnesses were held was independently verified by Axios.
Zoom in: Stewart was trying to get a glimpse of the rally after clocking out from his job at a nearby Sheetz convenience store. He wound up becoming a witness to an assassination attempt that left one rally attendee dead and another two wounded, the Secret Service said.
- Someone yelled, "AK" when they saw the shooter, Stewart said.
- Then bullets starting going over Stewart's head. He took video and continued recording for 10–15 minutes after the shooting.
- Stewart told Axios that law enforcement started shooting at the suspect on the rooftop immediately. Another witness told Stewart that he saw the suspect's head get blown apart.
Between the lines: Stewart was taken on the back of a Homeland Security vehicle filled with other witnesses to the Farm Show building.
- He was told not to talk to other witnesses aside from law enforcement.
- Officials told Stewart that 18 total witnesses were held temporarily in that building after the shooting.
