Rep. Brad Schneider urges Biden to exit presidential race

• One senator, Sen. Peter Welch (D-Vt.), has also urged Biden to step aside.

What he's saying: "We are faced with a stark choice: be resigned to slog through this election praying we can successfully defend our democracy, or enthusiastically embrace a vibrant vision for our future," Schneider said in a statement.

• "I love President Biden. I am forever grateful for his leadership and service to our nation. The time has come, however, for President Biden to heroically pass the torch to a new generation of leadership."
• "I fear if he fails to make the right choice, our democracy will hang in the balance," he added.

Between the lines: Schneider is a vice chair of the center-left New Democrat Coalition – a hub of moderate and swing-district lawmakers who are skeptical that Biden can still win.

• But not every frontline or moderate Democrat wants Biden to drop out: Rep. Nikki Budzinski (D-Ill.) and Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.) are among the dozens of lawmakers who have pronounced support for Biden as the nominee.

What we're watching: More statements calling for Biden to withdraw are expected to follow, with some lawmakers waiting for Biden's press conference at NATO, but others already decided on their course of action.

• Many members have heeded former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's (D-Calif.) call to "hold off" on commenting publicly until the NATO summit was over.
