Amazon revealed some of its Prime Day discounts on Thursday ahead of its crucial mid-year sales period on July 16 and 17.
Why it matters: Competition for deal-hungry consumers has intensified in recent years as Amazon Prime Day has spawned other retailers like Best Buy and Walmart to host their own sales around the same time.
- Some, including Target and Walmart, are holding their sales days ahead of Amazon's, pressuring the tech and logistics giant to pick the right sales to advertise.
Driving the news: Amazon says Prime members can get some of the lowest prices of the year on products from Dyson (up to 50% off), Stanley (up to 30% off) and brands like Lancôme and Sun Bum (30% to 40% off) among more than 5 million total deals worldwide.
- Other notable promotions include up to nearly 70% off of Amazon Fire TV products, up to 40% off Amazon brand products for college students, as well as travel deals for Southwest Airlines, Sixt rental cars and Viator experiences.
The intrigue: Luxury fashion labels like Altuzarra and Giuseppe Zanotti are also participating with 20% off sales as Amazon continues to ramp up its upscale offerings.
- And for sustainability-minded consumers, Amazon Prime Day will include 20% discounts this year for the secondhand shop What Goes Around Comes Around.
The big picture: The ability for Amazon Prime Day to help third-party sellers move product is also growing in importance as traditional brick-and-mortar stores like Target and Macy's beef up their own online stores with Amazon-like marketplaces.
