Ice cream sold nationwide recalled for listeria risk

Totally Cool, a Maryland company, has recalled nearly 70 ice cream products sold under 13 brand names because they could be contaminated with listeria.
Why it matters: Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immunes systems, according to the recall notice on the Food & Drug Administration website.
- Healthy individuals may have short-term symptoms like high fever, severe headache, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, per the FDA.
- Listeria can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
Threat level: No illnesses have been reported to date, per the recall notice.

Driving the news: The products were sold nationwide under various brand names, including Hershey's, Friendly's, Chipwich and Jeni's.
- Other affected products were sold under LaSalle, Dolcezza Gelato, Cumberland Farms, The Frozen Farmer and Marco.

Zoom in: Totally Cool, Inc. said in the recall that it has "ceased the production and distribution of the affected products due to FDA sampling which discovered the presence of Listeria monocytogenes."
- Consumers who purchased the affected products are urged to return to the place of purchase, the recall notes.
