Doug Burgum says Trump has "luxury" of not picking a VP to entice more voters

• Trump added that the person he's picked doesn't know it yet, and it was unclear from his comments when he planned to tell them.
• The former president previously said he would announce his vice president at the RNC, which is scheduled for July 15-18.

What they're saying: "I think we have to just look at the fact that President Trump could win this race regardless of who his vice president is. He's got the luxury of not having to pick someone," Burgum said during an appearance on CNN's "State of the Union."

• The Republican governor added that vice presidents historically don't swing an election one way or another.
• "I think if we actually look in political history, the last time a vice presidential pick actually helped swing an election was when [John F.] Kennedy picked Lyndon Johnson and Lyndon Johnson helped Kennedy win that race," he said.
• "And with President Trump right now, where he is with Hispanics, with blacks, with people under age 30 and with independents, I mean, he's very strong across the board. So he can pick someone that you can focus on, like, hey, let's get someone who gets stuff done. Let's get someone who helps him govern."

State of play: Burgum did not directly answer questions from CNN's Kaitlan Collins regarding why he is a strong candidate to be Trump's VP.

• "That's up to President Trump. President Trump understands the criteria that he wants; he's gonna make that choice in the time he makes it. He's got a lot of great choices," he said.
• Burgum said it is up to Trump to decide if he's the best choice to be on the ticket, and what makes the governor suited for the job is "a conversation between President Trump and myself."
• Burgum added that he's spent so much time as a surrogate for Trump's campaign because "North Dakota can't take four more years of Joe Biden."
• "There is no expectation that Kathryn [Burgum] and I have on this thing about some job at the administration or anything else," he said.
