Michigan school shooter sentenced to life in prison without parole

• The charges included four counts of first-degree murder and one terrorism-related count.

State of play: Crumbley was charged as an adult in the case. Prosecutors sought a life sentence without parole for him.

• A Michigan judge ruled in September that the sentence was appropriate despite Crumbley's age because he showed "slim" potential for rehabilitation and the crime did not bear the "hallmarks of youth," NBC News reported.

Details: Oakland County Circuit Judge Kwamé Rowe handed down the sentence.

• The court heard victim impact statements from family members of the victims and survivors as well as other Oxford high school students impacted by the shooting.

What they're saying: “I don't choose to forgive the destructive nature that caused her death. Forgiving is a choice. I choose not to forgive you for the choice you made,” Nicole Beausoleil, the mother of 17-year-old Madisyn Baldwin, told Crumbley.'

• Baldwin was killed in the shooting along with 16-year-old Tate Myre.

• “Love is obviously absent from our family because there’s no joy,” Tate's father, Buck Myre, told the court through tears.
• “Our family has a permanent hole in it that can never be fixed, ever,” he added.

The big picture: Crumbley's parents were also charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter in 2021.

• Both parents have pleaded not guilty and were set to face trial together on Jan. 23, but a judge last month granted their request to have separate trials, AP reported.
