Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.) announced Tuesday she will not seek re-election in 2022.

Why it matters: Speier's retirement comes amid a series of House Democrat retirements, though Republicans are unlikely to flip her seat.

  • Speier, who was an aide to the late Rep. Leo Ryan (D-Calif.), survived multiple gunshot wounds during the Jonestown massacre in Guyana in 1978.

What they're saying: "It's time for me to come home," The Bay Area Democrat said in a video. "Time for me to be more than a weekend wife, mother and friend."
