Serena Williams won't compete at Tokyo Olympics

Serena Williams said Sunday that she will not be competing in the upcoming Tokyo Olympics, the Associated Press reports.

Why it matters: Williams has won four gold medals for the United States during past summer games, competing in both single and doubles tennis competitions.

Williams told reporters that "there’s a lot of reasons that I made my Olympic decision," but that she did not wish to get into specifics.
Other former Olympic tennis players, namely Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem, have also announced they will not attend this summer's games.
The Tokyo Olympics have garnered sustained controversy with many criticizing the event as unsafe during a global pandemic.
