Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) on Saturday endorsed civil rights attorney Maya Wiley to be the next mayor of New York City.
Why it matters: The high-profile progressive's endorsement of the former aide to Mayor Bill de Blasio in the crowded Democratic field comes a week before early voting begins.
- It may help Wiley close in on front-runners Eric Adams, the Brooklyn borough president, former sanitation commissioner Kathryn Garcia and former presidential candidate Andrew Yang.
What they're saying: "If we don’t come together as a movement, we will get a New York City built by and for billionaires, and we need a city for and by working people," Ocasio-Cortez said outside City Hall in Manhattan, as Wiley looked on, per the New York Times.
- "So we will vote for Maya No. 1."
