Jared Kushner is meeting with Sens. John Cornyn (R-TX) and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), as well as Reps. Doug Collins (R-GA) and Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) to strategize on how to move a prison reform bill forward following its passage in the House last month, according to two Hill sources familiar with the meeting.
Why it matters: This comes as Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) continues to promote his own, more comprehensive criminal justice reform bill that has received broad bipartisan support. However, the controversial reforms to harsh federal sentencing laws have kept Attorney General Jeff Sessions and President Trump from backing the legislation.
