Terry Myerson, the head of Windows and a 21-year company veteran, is leaving the software maker amid a broader reorganization.
Why it matters: Myerson has been leading Microsoft's efforts to transform Windows from a piece of software that gets updated every couple of years into a more regularly updated product.
Rajesh Jha, who had been leading much of Microsoft's work, will assume responsibility for the broader business that includes Windows, while Joe Belfiore will continue to be in charge of much of the work on Windows itself.
Myerson had been with Microsoft since March 1997, when the software giant purcahsed his startup, Intersé, Before running Windows. Myerson led Microsoft's Exchange e-mail team as well as the company's mobile unit.
CEO Satya Nadella announced Myerson's departure, along with other organizational changes, in an e-mail to employees on Thursday. Myerson, meanwhile, shared his parting thoughts in a LinkedIn post.
