Why it matters: The Dow was at one point down by 567.01 points, before rallying back to a session high of 600.48 and a close of 567.02. The CBOE Volatility Index closed at 37.32, after reaching a 52-week high of above 50 following the Dow's worst single-day point drop in U.S. history.
