Flake: Trump, Republicans could put U.S. in "peril" by undermining Mueller

Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), a public opponent of President Trump, said he is extremely concerned by what he sees as the White House's repeated attempts to undermine Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation:

  • What will happen if Trump fires Mueller? "It will be a big problem. I don't think that will go over well at all. I don't think he'll go there. He shouldn't go there."
  • And if he pardons Mike Flynn? "That is equally troubling. If it's part of the investigation, as a way to circumvent the investigation somehow, that would be very troubling."
  • On Trump's relationship with the truth: "We undermine [our democracy] by talking about alternative facts or talking about statements that are just demonstrably false. Like 'I would have won the popular vote,' for example ... that's just not good. It's not right."
  • Running for president in 2020? "I don't rule anything out but it's not in my plans"
