"Super El Niño" could warm Pittsburgh's summer

Zoom in: For Pittsburgh, it means this summer will likely be a bit warmer and drier than usual, National Weather Service meteorologist Matt Brudy tells Axios.

What they're saying: "We have a 33% chance of above-normal temperatures for the summer," says Brudy.

• It's difficult to say just what kind of heat it will be, though, he says.
• It could range from the upper 80s and dry some days to the lower 80s and very humid other days.

Between the lines: El Niños typically split the jet streams, Brudy says, pushing one farther south and one north — and putting Pittsburgh in the middle.

What's next: Forecasters believe the Atlantic hurricane season will be weaker than usual, which could extend the drier season for Pittsburgh into the fall, says Brudy.
