Press secretary Jen Psaki on Tuesday confirmed that there have been multiple breakthrough coronavirus cases among White House staffers.

Driving the news: Her comments come after Axios first reported that a White House official and a staff member for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) tested positive for COVID-19 after attending the same reception last week

What she's saying: Psaki said that the White House has committed to sharing when a commissioned officer — "the highest level ranking people in the White House," she explained — tests positive for the virus. She did not clarify if that meant that the White House would not announce when a non-commissioned official gets infected.

  • Psaki did not say how many breakthrough cases there have been in the White House, but added that she would check.
  • She noted that White House staff are all vaccinated and get tested regularly, adding that she gets tested twice a week. President Biden gets tested about every two weeks, Psaki said.

6th Texas Democrat in D.C. tests positive for COVID

A sixth member of the Texas Democratic delegation that fled their state for D.C. in an effort to block a state GOP voting bill has tested positive for COVID-19, the Dallas Morning News first reported Monday night.

What they're saying: State Rep. Rafael Anchia told the outlet that all 55 members of the delegation had been observing CDC guidelines, adding: "We're grateful that 100% of us were vaccinated in advance…. This delta variant is no joke."

Vaccine boosters in rich countries risk longer wait in poorer nations

Illustration: Aïda Amer/Axios

The rapid spread of the Delta variant around the rich world has injected increased urgency into the debate around booster shots, but the World Health Organization and public health experts are trying to keep the focus on getting vaccines to those who don’t yet have access.

Why it matters: Israel last week became the first country to offer boosters to people with weak immune systems, and Pfizer is pushing for rapid approval of boosters in the U.S., citing preliminary data that suggests immunity may begin to wane after six months.
