Afghanistan's current UN ambassador Ghulam Isaczai. Photo: Timothy A. Clary/AFP via Getty Images

The United Nations said Tuesday that the Taliban asked to speak at the United Nations General Assembly's meeting this week, AP reports.

Why it matters: The move marks a direct challenge to Afghanistan's currently accredited UN ambassador, Ghulam Isaczai, whom the Taliban said no longer represented Afghanistan.

  • The militant group has instead nominated a new permanent representative, Mohammad Suhail Shaheen, a UN spokesperson told the AP.
  • Isaczai, a remainder of the ousted government, had asked to remain in the country's UN's seat in New York.

What to watch: When a UN seat is disputed, the General Assembly's nine-member Credentials Committee is tasked with making a decision.

  • The committee has not yet scheduled a meeting to discuss the conflict, though communications from both Isaczai and the Taliban have been forwarded.
  • Afghanistan is set to give the last speech on the final day of the General Assembly meeting on Sept. 27.

The World Health Organization and United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) will launch a house-to-house vaccination campaign to inoculate children in Afghanistan against polio, the UN announced Monday.

Why it matters: The campaign, which begins Nov. 8 with the Taliban's backing, is the first such vaccine drive in over three years to reach all Afghan children, the press release noted.

Rep. Lamborn may have misused official resources, ethics panel alleges

Congressional ethics investigators said Monday there is "substantial reason" to believe that Rep. Doug Lamborn (R-Colo.) misused official resources and solicited or accepted improper gifts from subordinates.

Driving the news: Lamborn's aides told investigators they were often asked to run personal errands for his wife, Jeanie Lamborn, and were at one point tasked with helping his son apply for a federal position, according to the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE). Lamborn strongly denies the allegations.

Biden calls Fox News reporter a "stupid son of a b---h" on hot mic

President Biden blasted Fox News' Peter Doocy on Monday after the reporter asked if the nation's soaring inflation is a political liability, saying, "what a stupid son of a b----h."

Driving the news: The Biden administration has faced rising inflation rates over recent months, which it has labeled as "transitory."
