Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba. Photo: Cristian Cristel/Xinhua via Getty Images

The Trump presidency was a "difficult time" for Ukraine, during which the country tried to maintain "bipartisan support" from Republicans and Democrats, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said in an interview with CNN on Wednesday.

The state of play: Ukraine found itself uncomfortably involved in U.S. domestic politics on account of Trump's lawyer Rudy Giuliani's dealings in the country.

  • Regarding the recent FBI search of Giuliani's apartment, Kuleba said he wasn't aware of any official request for assistance with the investigation, but noted that Ukraine would be "open to helping."
  • He would not say whether he believed Giuliani acted criminally, but noted that Trump's former attorney "was definitely playing politics and he put the situation at risk for Ukraine, and for the country's relationship with Washington."

The big picture: The interview aired just ahead of Secretary of State Antony Blinken's trip to Ukraine this week.

  • Kuleba noted that Ukraine hopes to buy military equipment from the U.S. to aid its simmering conflict with Russia.

The bottom line: "My impression is that Obama administration is about the past, and Biden administration is about today," Kuleba told CNN.

Feds seek outside review of seized Giuliani materials

Federal prosecutors have asked that the materials seized from former Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani's apartment be reviewed by a court-appointed outside expert, per a letter made public Tuesday.

Why it matters: The Justice Department typically balks at outside review, but prosecutors cited the "unusually sensitive privilege issues" and the "overt and public nature" of the search warrant as motives for the external review.

Brazil's Health Minister Marcelo Queirog has tested positive for COVID-19 while in New York City for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), he confirmed Tuesday night.

Why it matters: Hours earlier, Queirog had accompanied Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro to the UNGA. The Biden administration expressed concern last week that the gathering of world leaders could become a coronavirus "superspreader event."

Former President Trump filed a $100 million lawsuit against the New York Times and his niece Mary Trump on Tuesday over the news outlet's 2018 reporting on his tax records, the Daily Beast first reported.

Details: The suit, filed in New York's Dutchess County, alleges NYT journalists "engaged in an insidious plot to obtain confidential and highly-sensitive records" and that they "convinced" Mary Trump to "smuggle records out of her attorney's office and turn them over to The Times."
