Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) signed a bill into law Wednesday allowing people to carry a concealed handgun without a permit, per CNBC.

Why it matters: The new law will replace what Texas has presently, which allows residents 21 or older to carry a handgun only after completing training and passing a criminal background check to obtain a license to carry, per the Austin American-Statesman.

  • The law is effective on September 1. It will join Texas with at least 20 other states that have similar provisions, per the Austin American-Statesman.It's part of a package that Abbott touts as making Texas a "Second Amendment sanctuary," per CNBC.

Former Vice President Mike Pence said Wednesday he's hopeful the majority-conservative Supreme Court secured during the Trump administration will overturn abortion rights in the United States, according to AP.

Why it matters: Pence made the comments at a biennial forum held in Budapest by conservative leaders concerned about changes in demographics, family values, fertility rates and illegal immigration into Western countries.

A federal judge on Tuesday struck down parts of a Florida law aimed at banning local governments from establishing sanctuary city policies, arguing in part that the law is racially motivated and that it has the support of hate groups.

Why it matters: In a 110-page ruling issued Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Beth Bloom said the law — signed and championed by Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) — violates the Constitution's Equal Protection Clause because it was adopted with discriminatory motives.

Abortion providers urge Supreme Court to take up Texas ban

Abortion providers on Thursday asked the U.S. Supreme Court to review their legal challenge to the Texas abortion ban on an expedited basis because of the "great harm the ban is causing."

Why it matters: The case is currently tied up in lower courts, but the law has already wrought damage in the 23 days since it was enacted, abortion-rights advocates say.
