A COVID-19 coronavirus patient is shifted to ward after admission at GTB hospital in New Delhi on April 29. Photo: PRAKASH SINGH /Getty Images

The State Department has advised U.S. citizens to leave India as soon as possible, and avoid traveling there, as coronavirus cases surge in the country amid a widespread oxygen shortage and slow vaccine rollout.

The big picture: The advisory comes as India logs daily records in new COVID cases, with hospitals and morgues overwhelmed.

  • India reported 379,257 new COVID-19 infections and 3,645 new deaths on Thursday, its highest number of fatalities in a single day to date.
  • The country's total number of cases now sits at over 18.3 million, per Johns Hopkins University data.

Details: The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a Level 4 Travel Health Notice, while the State Department issued a Level 4 Travel Advisory — the highest level — advising Americans against all travel to India.

  • "Access to all types of medical care is becoming severely limited in India due to the surge in Covid-19 cases," according to the government warning.
  • "U.S. citizens are reporting being denied admittance to hospitals in some cities due to a lack of space," per the statement.

It's becoming more urgent to vaccinate the staff that care for vulnerable nursing home patients. But the industry, which has been plagued with workforce issues, faces a major challenge when it comes to mandating shots, the New York Times reports.

By the numbers: Nursing homes had seen major drops in infections after becoming one of the major hotspots for cases and deaths earlier on in the pandemic. But those numbers have reversed in recent weeks, CDC data shows.

As the contagious Delta variant continues to reach across the United States, more and more companies are delaying plans to reopen offices.

By the numbers: A recent survey of 1,000 HR professionals by the Society for Human Resource Management and Lucid found that half of U.S. organizations are worried about Delta. Some corporate players have started mandating vaccines for employees in an attempt to combat the variant.

Italy to require COVID passports for indoor activities, long-distance travel

The Italian government announced Thursday that proof of at least one dose of vaccine, a negative coronavirus test or recent recovery from COVID-19 will be required to access indoor dining, theaters, swimming pools, gyms, museums and other facilities starting Friday, according to AP.

Why it matters: Italy, which has been battered by the virus, has not yet mandated the vaccine for the general public, but the new requirements significantly tighten restrictions on unvaccinated people in the country.
