Dairy remains an enduring staple in the American kitchen, as habit and nostalgia keep consumers coming back for more. Strategic investment and innovation are shining a spotlight on dairy's long-standing role in wellness — breathing new life, and growth, into a category rooted in familiarity and function.
The landscape: Despite economic uncertainty and rising grocery costs, the U.S. retail dairy market continues to see steady growth. As of April 2025, retail dairy category dollar sales are up 5.5% year-over-year, with unit sales rising 2.8%, according to Dairy Management Inc.'s State of Dairy: Category, Consumer & Trends Report.
- Traditional dairy is outperforming dairy alternatives in both unit growth and consumer sentiment. Real dairy, meaning dairy that comes from cows, is maintaining 90-99% volume share across milk, cheese, yogurt and cream.
"We've spent the past decade investing in innovation and listening to consumers, and it's paying off," said Paul Ziemnisky, group executive vice president of wellness insights & innovation at Dairy Management Inc. "Dairy's relevance today comes from pairing timeless benefits with modern wellness trends."
🥛 Key trends to watch
Dairy brings comfort: Nostalgic foods are trending across dairy and other food and beverage categories. Consumers are turning to familiar flavors that evoke childhood memories like mac and cheese, warm milk-based drinks and cozy desserts.
Viral videos featuring trendy recipes like Dubai Chocolate are helping to generate buzz. There's been a 13% increase in conversations about dairy-related indulgent food and beverages on social media since 2023.
- Here's what else: Those who grew up enjoying dairy carry on the habit. The report notes that Americans cite habit, followed by taste, as the top reasons they reach for dairy. About 65% of people say they always ate dairy growing up.
Dairy's wellness renaissance: Consumers are increasingly turning to dairy to help meet their modern wellness goals amid an increased focus on protein, gut health and muscle recovery. Dairy products can provide a variety of health benefits.
- High-protein dairy products are growing in popularity as a performance-enhancing functional food. Yogurt has experienced a 10.4% growth YoY, largely driven by Greek yogurt's 20% volume increase.
- Consumers looking to support gut health also view yogurt-based products as a good source of friendly, live bacteria like Lactobacillus Acidophilus.
- Products like ultrafiltered milk and lactose-free options are gaining traction, especially among consumers prioritizing digestion and dietary flexibility — without compromising on taste or nutrition.
- Plus: Dairy's nutrient-rich profile helps support muscle building and recovery. Vitamin D is the top ingredient people are seeking, with 70% looking for more — up 8% since 2023.
"Today's consumers have more nutrition information at their fingertips than their grandparents had in a lifetime, but the landscape can be overwhelming," said Eve Pollet, senior vice president of strategic intelligence at Dairy Management Inc. "As people look to food to meet their wellness goals, they're turning to dairy for its nutrient-dense package with bioactives that support health in powerful ways."
🔬 The strategy: The dairy industry's growth is part of an intentional revitalization supported by long-running scientific research, category leaders' strategic efforts and rapid innovation to meet evolving consumer demands.
- Breakthrough R&D has answered the demand for clean label and functional foods — think protein-packed yogurts, gut-healthy probiotics and playful, snackable textures.
- Cross-industry partnerships and wellness-driven launches have brought new excitement and formats to the category.
- Sustainability efforts including local sourcing, regenerative farming and responsible animal care have helped the industry earn consumer trust and loyalty.
- Smart reformulation means today's dairy aisle includes more reduced sugar, higher protein and lactose-free choices for shoppers.
- And through it all, the industry stayed the course — with farmers, companies and innovators focused every day on delivering trusted, nutritious foods.
"We're translating consumer health needs into innovation — from exploring dairy's bioactive components to advancing nutrition, sustainability and product design," added Ziemnisky. "Health-conscious consumers want food that delivers on their goals, and dairy offers proven benefits with even more to discover as modern science meets the modern consumer."
Looking ahead: This report projects dairy consumption is expected to grow through 2030, driven in large part by the affordability of finished dairy products like yogurt and cheese.
- As consumers stay focused on value, dairy's accessible price point helps it remain a staple for households across income levels.
- This resilience positions dairy as a crucial contributor to public health, supporting nutrition equity through its wide availability and nutrient-rich profile.
The takeaway: While familiarity and affordability keep dairy in consumers' carts, ongoing innovation will shape growth and relevance in an ever-changing food landscape.
"Dairy is a food people trust, rooted in tradition, fueled by innovation, and ready to meet the needs of a changing world," concluded Ziemnisky. "Its staying power comes from never losing sight of what matters: nourishing people in ways that are affordable, accessible and built to last."
