Mobility matters: what vehicle access tells us about upward mobility

A message from: Capital One

Capital One
Access to a personal vehicle can be profoundly meaningful for individuals and families, but more than that, it directly correlates with upward mobility.
Reliable mobility can:
- Fuel independence.
- Expand economic opportunity.
- Offer peace of mind.
On the other hand: When people lack reliable transportation, geographic boundaries can become economic boundaries.
- This creates a self-reinforcing cycle that can constrain job search locations, restrict access to health care and impact earning capacity.
The story: Capital One's 2026 Mobility Access study evaluated 2,831 U.S. adults to analyze how personal vehicle access intersects with financial stability.
Three segments of consumers with varying levels of vehicle access were surveyed:
- Car-Secure: Have always had consistent access to a personal vehicle.
- Car-Limited: Have had intermittent access to a personal vehicle.
- Car-Hopeful: Currently do not have, but would like, access to a personal vehicle.
The results: Reliable vehicle access aligns with expanded earning potential, greater job resilience and reduced daily stress.
👷Mobility and earnings are linked.
Survey responses highlighted a strong connection between personal vehicle access and career stability.
- The Car-Limited and Car-Hopeful groups were twice as likely as Car-Secure consumers to describe their current financial situation as unstable — 58% versus 28%.
- Access to a reliable vehicle would allow Car-Hopeful consumers to pursue better job opportunities and shift flexibility, supporting a self-reported average of ~$21,000 in additional annual income, and for some up to $70,000.
🏡 Mobility affects housing.
Vehicle access directly impacts housing choices.
- 38% of Car-Hopeful consumers report having to live closer to work or school with 35% restricted to transit-adjacent neighborhoods and 22% reporting paying higher rent or mortgage costs just to live in walkable areas.
❤️🩹 Reliable vehicle access supports health and household well-being.
Reliable access to a vehicle shapes daily personal and family health and stability.
- Vehicle access expands care quality — 39% of those who are Car-Secure say a car lets them choose higher-quality care over proximity, and 41% report a broader choice of medical providers.
- Obtaining a car would enable 38% of Car-Hopeful parents to allow their children to participate in extracurricular activities, sports or after-school programs.
What this means: These findings underscore just how deeply personal mobility correlates with upward economic mobility.
- "In a time when so much around us feels like it is constantly changing, there are fundamental truths that do not," said Sanjiv Yajnik, President, Financial Services for Capital One. "One of those enduring truths is the vital role a vehicle plays in a person's life — serving as an essential bridge to earnings, family health and overall well-being."
Okay, but: While everyday Americans recognize how essential a vehicle is to their economic stability, rising market costs create barriers.
- 58% of Car-Hopeful consumers are not at all confident they can afford a new or used personal vehicle in today's market, while those with car access have reported their total vehicle operating costs have increased in the last year.
In other words: Reliable access to a car feels out of reach for many Americans.
Explaining the path: 70% of Car-Hopeful consumers express a clear need for guidance when buying a car, with nearly one in four (24%) reporting they wouldn't know where to begin.
- While education and budgeting tools can't lower market prices, the data demonstrates why consumers value them: upfront transparency and process clarity help demystify a major financial decision before ever stepping onto a dealership lot.
How it's done: Capital One's Car Buying Roadmap helps consumers navigate the car buying experience.
- The free educational resource is designed to bring added transparency to the car buying experience, plus offers an interactive tool to help prospective buyers budget and plan for potential ongoing ownership considerations.
The takeaway: Access to a vehicle can be a powerful driver of upward mobility in America.
- Personal mobility is about far more than a way to get from point A to point B — it can serve as a lasting engine to unlock economic opportunities, personal independence and individual and family well-being.
