The Senate voted 50-48 on Thursday to approve Rohit Chopra as the third director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Why it matters: Chopra, who served on the Federal Trade Commission, worked closely with Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) to establish the Bureau following the 2008 financial crisis.

The big picture: The 39-year-old will serve a five-year term after being approved along party lines Thursday.

  • Chopra's nomination failed in March after the Senate Banking Committee voted 12-12 along party lines. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer later discharged the nomination from the committee.
  • Chopra has served as the assistant director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and then the Student Loan Ombudsman.

McConnell’s done dealing

Less than 24 hours after Congress narrowly avoided a government shutdown, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) made a point of trying to spin the narrative to his party's favor, telling President Biden via letter that Republicans will not assist again if Democrats "drift into another avoidable crisis."

Why it matters: For months, McConnell refused to budge over his insistence that Democrats suspend the debt limit through the budget reconciliation process. Crisis was averted Thursday night after McConnell struck a deal with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) to raise the debt ceiling, and nailed down enough GOP senators to pass the agreement.

No one likes the debt deal

The leaders of the Senate were happy Thursday with their deal to avoid a debt default. They were about the only ones.

Why it matters: The Band-Aid does nothing to solve the debt ceiling problem long term for Americans. Democrats fear it only kicks the can down the road to a very busy December. Republicans, meanwhile, are mad their party blinked.

FDA authorizes mix-and-match for COVID booster shots

Photo: Francine Orr/Los Angeles Times via Getty Images

The Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) on Wednesday gave its approval for Americans to get booster shots that are different from the COVID vaccine they initially received.

Why it matters: The recommendation from the FDA, which also authorized booster shots for people who received Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines on Wednesday, paves the way for an expansion of booster shots.
