Canadian soccer player Quinn made history on Friday, becoming the first openly transgender and nonbinary athlete to not only medal at the Olympic Games, but to win gold.

Driving the news: Canada beat Sweden on Friday and earned its first-ever Olympic gold medal in women's soccer.

Between the lines: Quinn won a bronze medal with Team Canada in the Rio 2016 Games, but came out publicly as trans and nonbinary in 2020.

The big picture, via Axios' Ina Fried: Prior to this Olympics, there were no openly trans or nonbinary athletes to compete. There have been several this year: nonbinary American skateboarder Alana Smith, American freestyle BMX alternate Chelsea Wolfe and New Zealand weightlifter Laurel Hubbard, the first openly transgender woman to compete in the Olympics.

What they're saying: "I feel sad knowing there were Olympians before me unable to live their truth because of the world," Quinn said on Instagram in July.

  • "I feel optimistic for change. Change in legislature. Changes in rules, structures, and mindsets," they added.
  • "Mostly, I feel aware of the realities. Trans girls being banned from sports. Trans women facing discrimination and bias while trying to pursue their olympic dreams. The fight isn’t close to over… and I’ll celebrate when we’re all here."

Three activists disrupted the flame-lighting ceremony for the Beijing Winter Olympics on Monday, protesting human rights violations in China.

Why it matters: There have been widespread calls to boycott the Games, including a coalition of 180 human rights groups that cites China's treatment of the Uyghur Muslims and Tibetans. However, a boycott is highly unlikely, per Axios' Jeff Tracy.

White House blasts Texas bill targeting trans youth in sports as "hateful"

A White House spokesperson on Tuesday condemned a Texas bill that would force public school students to play on sports teams based on their assigned sex at birth, telling the Dallas Morning News the legislation is "hateful."

Why it matters: If passed, Texas would become the 10th state in the country to enact legislation banning transgender kids from playing on sports teams that match their gender identity, per NBC News.

Rahm Emanuel questioned on murder of Laquan McDonald in confirmation hearing

Former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel spoke about the murder of Laquan McDonald during his Senate confirmation hearing Wednesday to become the U.S. ambassador to Japan, saying that "there's not a day or a week that has gone by in the last seven years I haven't thought about this."

Catch up quick: McDonald was a Black teenager who was fatally shot 16 times by Chicago police during Emanuel's tenure as the city's mayor. The 2014 shooting triggered massive protests, both because of its nature and the fact that the officers' body-cam footage was concealed for years.
