Remembrances of lives lost are plentiful as New York commemorates the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in Lower Manhattan near Ground Zero. Photo: Spencer Platt/Getty Images

President Biden and first lady Jill Biden on Saturday were joined by former presidents, family members of victims and first responders at Ground Zero in New York City to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

Driving the news: The ceremony at Ground Zero began with a moment of silence at 8:46am, when Flight 11 struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center, followed by a reading of the victims' names who died in New York from the attack.

  • "Joe, we love and miss you more than you can ever imagine," said Lisa Reina, who was eight months pregnant when her husband, Joseph Reina Jr., died on the deadly day, per the Washington Post.
  • "[While] 20 years feels like an eternity … it still feels like yesterday," Reina said.
  • Bruce Springsteen also performed his song, "I'll See You Ii My Dreams," following the second moment of silence.

Protests erupt in Belarus after "Europe's last dictator" claims election win

Riot police clashed with protesters in Belarus overnight after a government exit poll predicted Sunday President Aleksander Lukashenko, an authoritarian who has ruled the Eastern European country since 1994, had overwhelmingly defeated a pro-democracy opposition candidate.

The latest: U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo condemned the election as "not free and fair" on Monday and urged the Belarusian government to "refrain from use of force" against protesters who have taken to the streets. At least one person has died in the protests, while hundreds have been injured and thousands arrested.

The case for Operation Warp Speed 2.0

Illustration: Annelise Capossela/Axios

Omicron's blitz around the world has underscored the need for a new arsenal of COVID vaccines and therapeutics, experts say — and that may require an effort akin to Operation Warp Speed 2.0.

Why it matters: The virus will continue to evolve, potentially in a way that further escapes vaccine protection, and the best way to prevent more global disruptions to everyday life is to have tools ready to combat whatever comes next.
