Paris and other regions within France will enter a month-long lockdown starting Friday as coronavirus cases, hospitalizations and deaths across the country spike, Prime Minister Jean Castex announced Thursday, according to Le Parisien.

Driving the news: The lockdown, the third for France's capital city since the start of the pandemic, will include the closure of nonessential businesses, a curfew and restrictions on outdoor trips.

By the numbers: Since the start of the pandemic, France has seen 4.2 million cases of COVID-19, per data from Johns Hopkins University.

  • Over the last 24 hours, France has reported 34,998 new cases and 273 deaths, according to Le Parisien.
  • Currently, 25,389 people are hospitalized because of the virus. More than 4,000 of those people are in intensive care.

The big picture: President Emmanuel Macron has opposed a third national lockdown due to the economic, social and psychological impacts, instead preferring local restrictions where cases and hospitalizations are rising, according to France 24.

  • Health authorities have initiated the transfer of critically ill patients to less-affected regions to ease pressure on hospitals, AP writes.
  • Castex also announced that the country would restart AstraZeneca vaccinations on Friday after the government suspended its use over reports of blood clots in recipients of that vaccine.

Omicron outbreaks were bad for business in January

Data: New York Federal Reserve Bank; Chart: Axios Visuals

Emerging anecdotal evidence shows just how hard the recent rise in COVID-19 cases hit businesses in early January — but that hasn't hurt some business leaders’ longer-term views on their companies' prospects.

Why it matters: Increasingly, the economic recovery has come in fits and starts that move in tandem with new peaks in cases. Look no further than the thousands of cancelled flights and shuttered Broadway theaters in the wake of the Omicron variant's spread over the last few months.

The shifting definition of fully vaccinated

Illustration: Sarah Grillo/Axios

The definition of what it means to be "fully vaccinated" is evolving even as the CDC has remained careful not to officially change it.

Why it matters: CDC officials have been balancing the job of convincing Americans who've already gotten two doses of the importance of boosters with getting many Americans who still need their first doses to get their shots at all.

Small businesses see hiring as No. 1 worry

Illustration: Aïda Amer/Axios

Almost every small business owner in a Goldman Sachs survey is having trouble hiring — and two-thirds think the federal government has done too little to ease their hiring, supply-chain and inflation worries.

Why it matters: The Goldman Sachs research gives a vivid window into the continuing headwinds and hardship for entrepreneurs.
