The latest move to lure would-be employees might be back-to-work cash.

  • Montana will no longer offer the extra $300 in unemployment benefits, but it plans to give a one-time $1,200 bonus for workers who accept a job and complete a month of paid work.
  • Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) will propose a bill to use boosted unemployment insurance funds for a "two-month signing bonus" for workers hired by July 4. It would pay out slightly more than two months' worth of benefits.

Why it matters: The hope is if (big if) money is keeping workers at home, money can lure them back into the workforce.

  • Politicians and economists are split over whether the generous unemployment that's kept millions afloat is driving worker shortages.

P.S. ... Chipotle will raise wages, debut up to $750 referral bonus to fuel hiring.

Nearly 6,000 students in quarantine or isolation in Florida school district

Nearly 6,000 students and over 300 staff members tested positive or have been exposed to COVID-19 in a Florida school district, officials announced Monday.

Why it matters: The alarming number of people in quarantine or isolation has prompted an emergency board meeting at Hillsborough County Public Schools — the seventh-largest district in the nation.

The Florida Board of Education voted Tuesday to sanction two public school districts for defying Gov. Ron DeSantis' order barring mask mandates in school, per NBC News.

Why it matters: It marks the first punishment doled out against school officials who have clashed with the Republican governor on the issue. Nearly 6,000 students and over 300 staff members have tested positive or have been exposed to COVID-19 in one district.

Axios-Ipsos poll: Most Americans favor mandates

Most Americans support mandating masks in schools and vaccinations to return to the workplace, and they oppose states' efforts to ban such moves, according to the latest installment of the Axios/Ipsos Coronavirus Index.

But, but, but: The survey finds the Republican base going against the grain so disproportionately that it helps explain the defiant postures of many red-state governors.
