Olivia Rodrigo. Photo: JMEnternational/JMEnternational for BRIT Awards/Getty Images

Pop star Olivia Rodrigo will visit the White House on Wednesday to meet with President Biden and Anthony Fauci and to record videos to encourage young people to get vaccinated, the White House announced Tuesday.

Why it matters: Vaccination rates for young Americans are lagging behind those of older adults. Young people's reluctance to get inoculated "is impeding efforts to develop the communitywide immunity sought to move past the pandemic and fend off Delta and other variants," the Wall Street Journal writes.

By the numbers: Only 41.6% of Americans between the ages of 18 and 24 are fully vaccinated, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

  • 24.9% of people ages 12 to 15 and 37.1% of people 16 to 17 are fully vaccinated.
  • By comparison, 56% of all adults 40 years and older are fully vaccinated.

What to watch: The videos will be released on Rodrigo and the White House's social media pages.

Members of the Food and Drug Administration's vaccine expert panel on Thursday endorsed boosters for Moderna recipients who are at high risk of severe COVID-19, occupational exposure to COVID-19 or are 65 years and older.

Why it matters: The unanimous decision mirrors the FDA conditions for those who qualify for a Pfizer booster.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced on Thursday that it will meet on Nov. 30th to review Merck's experimental oral antiviral COVID-19 treatment

Why it matters: An oral antiviral drug designed to prevent or treat COVID-19 could be a key tool to combat the pandemic. Merck ended its vaccine development in January.
