Pro-Trump protesters rally inside the Capitol Building on Jan. 6. Photo: Brent Stirton/Getty Images

Graydon Young, 54, will plead guilty on Wednesday as part of a 16-person conspiracy case alleging members of the far-right Oath Keepers militia plotted to carry out the Jan. 6 Capitol attack, CNN reports.

Why it matters: It's the first guilty plea among defendants in any of major Jan. 6 conspiracy cases being prosecuted by the Justice Department, including those targeting the far-right Proud Boys and Three Percenters. It's unclear whether Young's plea signals that he will cooperate with prosecutors going forward.

Context: The FBI describes the Oath Keepers as a "paramilitary organization" composed of current and former military members, law enforcement and first-responders, who believe that "the federal government has been coopted by a shadowy conspiracy that is trying to strip American citizens of their rights."

  • Prosecutors say Young took part in the "stack" military formation of Oath Keepers that cut through the crowd to move inside the Capitol, per CNN.
  • He is charged with six crimes, including conspiracy and aiding and abetting the obstruction of the congressional proceeding. These charges may be reduced as a result of the deal.
  • The co-defendants in Young's case continue to contest their charges.

U.S. requests imprisonment for Jan. 6 misdemeanor defendants for the 1st time

Two Ohio men were sentenced to serve 45 days in prison after prosecutors requested incarceration for the first time at sentencing hearings for Capitol rioters who took plea deals for nonviolent misdemeanors.

Why it matters: Federal judges have debated whether the no-prison plea deals offered to low-level Jan. 6 defendants are too lenient to deter potential future attackers.

FDA panel endorses shot of J&J booster for adults

Members of the Food and Drug Administration's vaccine expert panel on Friday unanimously endorsed a booster shot for adult recipients of Johnson & Johnson's COVID-19 vaccine at least two months after the initial dose.

Why it matters: The advisory committee raised concerns about a dearth of data to support their decision but ultimately decided to support an additional shot for those over 18.

Capitol Police officer indicted for obstructing Jan. 6 investigation

A U.S. Capitol Police officer has been indicted on obstruction of justice charges for allegedly helping hide evidence of a participant's involvement in the Jan. 6 riot.

Driving the news: Officer Michael A. Riley, 50, is accused of telling the unidentified participant, referred to as "Person 1," in the Jan. 6 riot to delete posts from Facebook, which showed them in the Capitol during the attack.
