1 big thing: ⚾️ Trop nostalgia hits fever pitch
We were so cocky, strolling into Tropicana Field 10 minutes before Saturday night's first pitch, spoiled by our easily obtained player bobbleheads and specialty jerseys at past Rays promotional games.
- Not only were the light-up Trop replicas already gone — we'd missed the wave of giveaways by 40 minutes, a staffer told us.
- Later that night, I checked eBay and saw that one had already sold for $75. More were up for bid, starting at $50.
Why it matters: In this season that's both a homecoming and the start of a long goodbye, Trop nostalgia is at an all-time high.
State of play: Fans were already lined up for Saturday's game before gates opened at 4:10pm, undeterred by the stormy weather.
- Heading to our seats empty-handed, my friend Brian (a Rays megafan and season ticket holder) and I (a kitsch enthusiast) eyed the yellow and blue boxes with cartoon villain levels of conniving:
- "I can take 'em," I said of an elderly couple who had the audacity to take one box each. (Two! For one household!)
Half a beer later, liquid courage coursing through our veins, we started approaching people.
- "Not even close," a woman said to my fiancé after he offered to buy her a beer in exchange, and that became representative of our fruitless quest. Even a group of Giants fans turned us down.
The big picture: For a ballpark considered one of the worst in Major League Baseball, the Trop commands a strong fanbase in its own backyard.
- "There are memories here," Tampa Bay Times editor Christian Blauvelt wrote in a recent love letter to the stadium. For a sampling, just look at the comments.
- It makes me think of my friend Brian's Trop tattoo. It shows the stadium, ringed by palm trees and rays of sunlight. "Another man's treasure," it reads, playing on the proverb.

What they're saying: That loyalty only strengthened after Hurricane Milton, Rays chief business officer Bill Walsh told Axios.
- "Now we've got this incredible comeback story," Walsh said, adding that the April 25 "Back in the 'Burg" T-shirt giveaway was also wildly popular. Some of those shirts, too, ended up on eBay.
- That just further speaks to the fervor, he said. (It also doesn't break any giveaway rules, he said. Trust me. I asked.)
Back beneath the dome, the Rays were winning, but Brian and I were losing, still empty-handed.
- Walking back to our seats, a man ran up behind us. He heard we were in the market for some Trop replicas, and had two he was willing to sell for $25 each.
- We bought them. Of course we did. "One man's trash," as they say.
2. ✈️ Why Spirit mattered
Spirit Airlines is going out of business and canceling flights nationwide, including in Tampa Bay.
Why it matters: The airline may have been the butt of jokes, but it filled a vital niche for cost-conscious travelers.
Zoom in: All of its flights at Tampa International Airport (TPA) have been canceled, and customers are advised to contact the airline for refunds.
- Spirit had been scheduled to run 43 outbound flights per week from TPA, serving six destinations, according to the Tampa Bay Business Journal.
- The carrier's presence in Tampa had already dwindled, accounting for 6.59% of TPA's market share in March 2025 with 162,282 passengers.
The big picture: Spirit was the Fung Wah bus of the skies, offering a cheap way to get around so long as you managed your expectations, brought your own snacks and didn't mind a delay or two.
- Wharton School professor Mohamed A. El-Erian wrote on Bluesky earlier this week that Spirit "helped democratize the skies, providing a bridge for those who previously found travel out of reach."
- It also provided badly needed competition, pushing rivals to offer no-frills basic economy options of their own.
🪦 The bottom line: Spirit's primary cause of death will be listed as skyrocketing jet fuel prices tied to the Iran war that exacerbated longstanding financial issues.
- More turbulence for airlines — especially troubled carriers like JetBlue — seems inevitable with no end to the Hormuz crisis in sight.
3. The Pulp: 🎨 Banksy bound for Tampa

4. 💼 Young talent magnet
Tampa Bay is a top destination for college graduates, according to a new study.
The big picture: The region is second on the list, based on payroll processor ADP's ranking of 20-something hiring rates, wages and affordability.
- That's an enormous leap from last year's ranking, which had Tampa Bay at 26th — an increase that's due in part to the region's hiring rate, which swelled from 2.6% to 3.4%
- Birmingham, Alabama, topped the list.
How it works: ADP ranked 53 metro areas with at least one million residents based on wages, hiring and cost of living.
The bottom line: Entry-level hiring is rebounding this spring — but in a tough job market, young professionals' prospects may depend on the role, sector and location, the Wall Street Journal reports.
5. 🍦 You found Rida!
So many of you guessed it! Rida and his pal, Yacob, grabbed a waffle bowl at Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream on Tampa's West Palm Avenue.
- Congrats to readers Emily Biel, James Harter, Brandy Miller, Jennifer Bhatia and Lynn Lewis for knowing the spot.
🙏 Kathryn is thinking she'll need to line up several hours early for the Flappy Boi bobblehead giveaway.
🥳 Yacob made his LAST-EVER tuition payment yesterday!
