1 big thing: π Oasis says goodbye
Oasis, San Francisco's beloved drag nightclub, will permanently close at the end of the year after more than a decade of serving as a cultural hub for queer nightlife.
Why it matters: The closure marks the end of an era for one of the city's most celebrated LGBTQ+ venues β a space that launched careers, created a devoted community and spotlighted drag and queer performers.
Driving the news: The closure, announced yesterday, comes as the club has struggled with attendance post-pandemic, as well as rising costs and declining bar sales.
- Owner D'Arcy Drollinger had to tap into his retirement savings to keep the business afloat, he told Axios.
- "There is a strong community; it's just not enough. It breaks my heart," he said.
Zoom in: Oasis has anchored a number of over-the-top parties and community events, and it produced campy originals in a genre Drollinger brands "Vaudeville 2.0," with titles such as "Sh*t & Champagne," "Reparations" and most recently "Jurassiq Parq."
- Since opening in 2014, numerous high-profile drag artists, including Snaxx and Nicki Jizz, and celebrity guests including Cher, Anderson Cooper and Jane Fonda have made appearances.

What they're saying: Peaches Christ, an internationally renowned drag queen, told Axios she's "absolutely gutted."
- "(D'Arcy's) team built something truly vital to San Francisco's queer culture β uplifting talent, entertaining endlessly and giving both artists and patrons a home. It's hard to imagine the city without it," she said.
Zoom out: While the brick-and-mortar at 298 11th St. may be closing, Oasis Arts β the nonprofit arm of the club β will continue to carry on the legacy with shows at other Bay Area venues next year, per Drollinger, who is also the city's first Drag Laureate.
Claire's thought bubble: Losing Oasis β which has been such a huge part of my life β feels like losing a piece of San Francisco's heart.
- Since first going in 2021, I've laughed and cried in those four walls, staged two shows and met lifelong friends.
2. Made in the Bay: π€Έ Slackliner Breannah Yeh
Breannah Yeh is not your typical content creator. A professional slackliner, she was born in Oakland, moved to San Ramon when she was 11 and discovered slacklining two years later at an El Cerrito rock climbing gym.
- It differs from tightrope walking in that it involves a flat piece of webbing instead of rigid wire.
The following answers have been lightly edited.
How did you decide to start focusing on content full time?
During COVID I had a slackline video that went viral ... and that next week, I quit my job to pursue content full time! Was terrified, but had to take a chance on myself.
What's one part of content creation that you love but people might not realize takes a lot of effort?
I'm extremely particular about each clip I choose, because I want people to feel how I feel when I'm telling my stories!
How has living in the Bay Area impacted you/your work?
I grew up in the Bay and my first slacklining videos I've ever recorded were there at 13! ... Even though I travel quite a bit, I like coming back to the Bay to my roots and creating content there.

3. The Wiggle: π Whale deaths at historic high
π Scientists have recorded 21 gray whale deaths in the San Francisco Bay Area this year β the most in 25 years, per the Marine Mammal Center. (ABC 7 News)
Nicholas Pellegrino, a 29-year-old teacher at San Francisco's Archbishop Riordan High School, is recovering after surviving a knife attack while on vacation in Italy. (SF Chronicle)
βΌοΈ Katy Perry experienced a midair prop malfunction when the mechanical butterfly she was riding suddenly dropped a few feet during her concert in San Francisco last Friday. (CBS News)
4. π Grading Mayor Lurie
Voters are "far happier" with Mayor Daniel Lurie than with his predecessor London Breed, according to a new poll commissioned by the San Francisco Chronicle.
Driving the news: 73% of respondents say they "strongly" or "somewhat" approve of Lurie, compared to just 28% who said the same of Breed last July.
- People who had recently moved to San Francisco were more supportive of him than longtime residents, and progressives were the least likely to say they approved of his performance.
- San Franciscans rated him least favorably on providing enough reasonably-priced housing (36% approved) and shelter to the homeless (44% approved).
The intrigue: Half of voters say Lurie should continue to prioritize local issues, while 29% said he should help take on the Trump administration.
The fine print: The Chronicle surveyed 961 registered voters earlier this month.
- 53% of respondents were non-Hispanic white, disproportionately higher than the city's demographics (37%).
5. π Where in SF was Shawna?

All right, team. I'm gonna be disappointed if no one gets this right.
State of play: This is one of my favorite restaurants in the city β their thrice-cooked bacon and rice cakes dish is to die for.
π Hint: It started off as a food cart in 2008 before becoming a San Francisco staple in the Mission.
Reply with your best guess!
β€οΈβπ©Ή Shawna can't believe Oasis is closing. It's an iconic institution that paved the way for the drag scene here and brought so much joy to so many people's lives.
- A humongous thank you to D'Arcy Drollinger for keeping it alive through all these years.
π Nadia has experienced so many joyous moments at Oasis β memories she will forever cherish. One of her favorites includes seeing Claire perform in her parody musical about Costco.
π Claire is truly devastated to hear about Oasis' closure. That venue is a one-in-a-million and truly how she met her community in SF.
