Top of the Morning
China's antitrust regulator this morning announced an investigation into Nvidia, the Silicon Valley chipmaker whose GPUs are driving the AI revolution.
Why it matters: This is the sort of thing that could escalate supply chain skirmishes into a tech trade war.
State of play: China's antitrust investigation relates to promises that Nvidia made in 2020, in order to garner approval for its $7 billion acquisition of U.S.-based Mellanox Technologies.
- It didn't get more granular, but we know that Nividia had pledged that the deal wouldn't slow the flow of Mellanox products to China.
- Since then, however, the Biden administration has implemented several crackdowns on Nvidia chip sales to China, while China last week retaliated by blocking the export of certain rare minerals to the U.S.
Zoom out: All of this comes before tariff enthusiast Donald Trump reenters the White House, where he's likely to be joined by China hawk Jamieson Greer as U.S. trade representative.
- Plus a bunch of tech advisers, both formal and informal, who have talked a lot about making sure that the U.S. stays ahead of China in the AI race.
Investor reax: Nvidia shares fell 2.4% at today's open, and everyone will be paying very close attention given how it's been the bull market's biggest driver.
Thought bubble: Beijing already doesn't want to let ByteDance divest TikTok, even though that has nothing to do with AI chips, and this may signal the strength of its resolve.
- Trump has signaled his opposition to that ban, in a reversal of his prior position, but he doesn't seem to have much wiggle room unless TikTok wins an appeal to the Supreme Court.
Counterargument: The U.S. Justice Department also is investigating Nvidia on antitrust grounds, so there could be less geopolitical tension here than meets the eye.
The bottom line: Dealmaking between U.S. and Chinese tech companies is essentially dead, and today feels like another shovel of dirt.
The BFD
Omnicom Group (NYSE: OMC) has agreed to acquire Interpublic Group (NYSE: IPG) for around $13.3 billion in stock.
Why it's the BFD: It would create the world's largest advertising agency, overtaking current leader WPP.
The bottom line: "It's been more than a decade since two major ad agencies tried to combine. Omnicom and Publicis announced a merger in 2013, but it fell apart less than a year later ... This combination could usher in more consolidation." — Sara Fischer & Kerry Flynn, Axios
