Axios PM

πͺ Happy Hump Day, PM friends. Today's newsletter, edited by Avery Lotz, is 680 words, a 2Β½-min. read. Thanks to Sheryl Miller for copy editing.
1 big thing: π Trump's NATO trouble tour

President Trump hijacked NATO's summit in Turkey, threatening allies and declaring the Iran ceasefire "over," Axios' Avery Lotz and Zachary Basu report.
- The Ankara summit morphed into the Trump show, with the agenda overshadowed by the president's grudge against allies who sat out on Iran.
π₯ On his quick trip, Trump opened new wounds and rubbed salt in others by:
- Threatening to cut off all trade with Spain, calling the country "hopeless."
- Deeming talks with Tehran a "waste of time" and suggesting the U.S. could take out "every single bridge" in Iran.
- Renewing chatter over his demand to acquire Greenland.
- Saying he's a "big fan" of Chinese President Xi Jinping and cozying up to Turkish President Recep Tayyip ErdoΔan over Israel's objections.
- Making it abundantly clear: "I'm not happy with NATO."
π₯ Reality check: Despite mounting concern about rifts in the alliance, members reaffirmed their commitment to collective defense and pledged "unwavering support" β including security funding β for Ukraine.
- In the summit's most concrete win, Trump told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky the U.S. will license Ukraine to manufacture its own Patriot air-defense interceptors β a capability Kyiv has sought for years.

2. π² Hospital health kick

MAHA food initiatives are hitting hospitals with a new administration push to serve patients meals that more closely align with dietary guidelines, Axios' Adriel Bettelheim and Tina Reed first reported.
- Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said: "Patients recovering from serious medical conditions deserve better than ultraprocessed and deep-fried junk foods."
The big picture: The administration has linked dietary patterns with recovery rates, the management of chronic diseases and overall health outcomes.
π₯ The "Make Hospital Food Healthier Pledge" calls on facilities to cut down on ultraprocessed items, replace deep frying with other cooking methods, limit processed meats and emphasize whole grains, among other goals.
- Many hospitals already emphasize healthy food options and preparation methods in their cafeterias.
3. β‘οΈ Catch me up

- π Oil prices climbed Wednesday after Trump said the ceasefire with Iran is "over." Today's rise is sharp, but there have been larger spikes during the conflict. And prices are nowhere near the levels they reached in the spring, Axios energy reporter Ben Geman notes.
- π« Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (D) pressed Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) for an update on his health as speculation swirls about the 84-year-old's ability to serve. McConnell has been hospitalized for roughly three weeks. GOP leaders say they've spoken with him. More on Beshear's letter.
- βοΈ A federal judge ordered the release of the $5 million awarded to E. Jean Carroll after a 2023 jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation. Judge Lewis Kaplan cited the Supreme Court's recent rejection of Trump's bid to toss the civil verdict. Go deeper.
- πΈ Affordable Care Act coverage costs are due to spike again next year, meaning customers could be on the hook for thousands more. Insurers blame the hikes on rising costs of health care services and the expiration of enhanced subsidies, Axios' Peter Sullivan reports from a KFF analysis out today.
- π€ Elon Musk's SpaceXAI is launching Grok 4.5, its smartest model yet. Grok 4.5 is being pitched as a coding and agentic-work tool. Meanwhile, GPT-5.6 hype is building, with the OpenAI model's public rollout set for tomorrow. More on Grok 4.5 ... What to expect from OpenAI.
