1 big thing: Iran dashes U.S. hopes

Iran’s hard-line president-elect used his first press conference to dash U.S. hopes for a “longer and stronger” nuclear deal, though an agreement to revive the 2015 deal may still be imminent.
- 60-year-old cleric Ebrahim Raisi ruled out any limits to Iran’s missile capabilities and support for regional militias, AP reports.
- “It’s nonnegotiable,” Raisi said of Iran’s ballistic missile program, adding the U.S. “is obliged to lift all oppressive sanctions against Iran.”
- Former President Trump scrapped the original deal in 2018.
The big picture: Millions of Iranians stayed home Friday in defiance of the presidential election they saw as tipped in Raisi’s favor, AP notes.
- Raisi will be inaugurated in six weeks, creating urgency for a deal.
- Analysts and some diplomats involved in the negotiations have long said it would be easier to reach a deal with the outgoing administration, notes Axios World editor Dave Lawler.
Between the lines: "The theory in Washington and Tehran is that Ayatollah Khamenei ... does not want to give up his best hope of ridding Iran of the penalties that have kept its oil out of a resurging market," the N.Y. Times reports.
- "Iran’s moderates would be set up to take the blame for capitulating to the West and bear the brunt of popular anger inside Iran if sanctions relief does not rescue the nation’s stricken economy."

2. Community colleges hammered by COVID

Undergraduate college enrollment fell by nearly 5% in the spring of 2021 compared to the year before, Axios' Bryan Walsh reports.
- Two-year community colleges, which typically enroll more low-income students and students of color, were by far the hardest hit, making up more than 65% of the total enrollment losses this spring.
- For-profit private universities had a much steeper drop, but enroll far fewer students overall.
3. Catch up quick

- Sweetgreen has filed confidentially for an IPO, Axios' Dan Primack reports.
- California will pay off accumulated unpaid rent that piled up during COVID-19, fulfilling a promise to help landlords break even and giving renters relief. Go deeper.
- The Supreme Court unanimously ruled against the NCAA on allowing schools to provide unlimited academic-related benefits to their student-athletes. Go deeper.
- A new Netflix partnership with Steven Spielberg's Amblin Partners will generate "multiple" new films every year. Go deeper.
4. 1 coming reality: Reservations for open spaces

The days of the spontaneous national park road trip may be on their way out, thanks to surging crowds and overwhelmed park rangers.
- The big picture: “This year has been over the top with new visitors who really are not educated as to how to appropriately recreate,” Joette Langianese told AP.
Between the lines: Reservation systems for park entry are in place at Rocky Mountain and Yosemite National Parks, with the prospect of more.
- Arches National Park in Utah is on track to have its busiest year ever, causing the park to close its gates over 80 times so far in 2021, AP notes.
