๐ง Sounds like: "Why They Play Me?" by Bruiser Wolf, BabyTron.
๐ค๏ธ Today's weather: Mostly sunny, with a high of 42 and a low of 34.
Today's newsletter is 918 words โ a 3.5-minute read.
1 big thing: DCFC's final Keyworth season
The final Detroit City FC season at Hamtramck's Keyworth Stadium kicks off Saturday against Brooklyn FC.
Why it matters: After a decade of packed stands and smoke-filled marches to Keyworth, the club is set to move in 2027 to its new 15,000-seat stadium on Michigan Avenue in Corktown.
Zoom in: Tickets to Saturday's 4pm home opener start at $30.
Game day guide
- ๐ช Gates: Typically open 90 minutes before the match.
- ๐ฅ March to the Match: Supporters gather about 75 minutes before kickoff at New Dodge Lounge and march to the stadium with drums and collective chants โ a tradition worth arriving early to join.
- ๐ Parking: Some parking is available on surrounding residential streets (watch for posted restrictions). Paid lots are also available through the team and at the Fowling Warehouse.
- ๐บ Food & drink: Food trucks and beer options are available inside; expect typical stadium bag policies and security screening.
Zoom out: DCFC competes in the USL Championship, widely considered the second tier of pro soccer in the U.S., just below Major League Soccer.
Flashback: Le Rouge finished eighth in the Eastern Conference last season, losing in the conference semifinals to Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC.
Between the lines: The team's home opener comes amid a labor dispute between the league and its players' association. The two sides "remain far apart" on key issues including minimum compensation, health insurance and NIL rights, Front Office Sports reported yesterday.
- Last weekend's USL Championship matches began with players remaining still for the first minute in recognition, while Saturday's DCFC home opener will take place as planned, a team spokesperson tells Axios Detroit.
2. Sheffield settles into Manoogian Mansion
As Detroit's first female mayor, Mary Sheffield has become the first female officeholder to reside at the mayoral Manoogian Mansion.
State of play: Sheffield has officially moved into the iconic home along the east riverfront in the Berry subdivision, a city spokesperson confirmed to Axios.
- The spokesperson said they weren't aware of any renovations planned to the century-old home given a new occupant, but they didn't answer a question asking when Sheffield moved into it.
Flashback: The seven-bedroom, nine-bath mansion was built in 1927 for $65,000, per Detroit Historical Society archives.
- Industrialist and philanthropist Alex Manoogian donated the home to the city in 1965 to be used as a mayor's residence.
- The first mayor to live there was Jerry Cavanagh, according to the Michigan Chronicle.
Historically, per the archives, the mansion's study was used as the mayor's second office, and dignitary receptions and conferences were often held there.
Between the lines: The nonprofit Mayors Residence Society is responsible for the mansion's upkeep and furnishing, per the Free Press, which reported last year on $347,000 in privately funded upgrades under former Mayor Mike Duggan.
