1 big thing: Plaza Midwood's one-stop wellness hub
A small house in Plaza Midwood is becoming a one-stop wellness hub.
Why it matters: Step into the painted brick home tucked behind Supperland, and you'll find a a tea house, a primary care doctor's office, a clinical research startup and a life coach all sharing the same space.
- It wasn't planned that way, but the businesses have naturally become a neighborhood wellness network.
Catch up quick: When Dr. Melissa Jones expanded her direct primary care practice, Priority Care, into the house on McClintock Road, she found herself with more space than she needed.
- Instead of leaving the offices empty, she started subleasing them this past spring to other mission-driven, local businesses.
- The result is a community-focused wellness ecosystem, where the four independent tenants regularly refer clients to one another and host workshops and events to support each other โ and the neighborhood.
Between the lines: Most of the businesses inside are women-owned, adding to Plaza Midwood's growing network of locally-owned businesses led by women, including the cluster of Trope Bookshop, Wiloe Home & Gift and Plot Twist.
What's inside:
๐ต Rising Tea & Alchemy: A tea house serving mostly Chinese teas along with blends made by a local herbalist.
๐ง Stuck is Temporary: Life coaching, declutter guidance, hypno-breathwork and somatic healing.
๐ฉบ Priority Care: A membership-based primary care practice.
๐งช James Clinical Research: A community-based research practice conducting studies on everything from vaccines to diabetes, obesity, gastrointestinal conditions and dermatology.
The big picture: In a neighborhood where new development often brings more chains and private equity-backed businesses, this little house is proof that local businesses can still build something deeply rooted in community and collaboration.

2. ๐๏ธ 19-story SouthPark towers
SouthPark could get its tallest towers yet as Texas developer Hines moves forward with plans for two 19-story buildings along Carnegie Boulevard.
Why it matters: The mixed-use project, which has no timeline for groundbreaking, will densify nearly 4 underutilized acres in fast-changing SouthPark, bringing hundreds of new residents and office workers to the site.
What to expect: Plans for The Gallery SouthPark, as the project's called, will transform a retail strip, home to Rooster's and other restaurants, and the closed Wendy's building.
- The development's slated to include a 19-story, 250,000-square-foot "highly amenitized" office building, with "private terraces, a shared sky terrace and lounge, conference and training facilities and fitness offerings," per a press release.
- The office won't begin construction until space is pre-leased to companies, Hines tells Axios.
Also on site, Hines is planning a 19-story, 302-unit residential building.
- Ground-floor retail will surround a plaza with public art. Hines hasn't shared any more details on prospective businesses.
The big picture: SouthPark is evolving from a suburban, car-first mall destination to an urban, walkable, hot office submarket with a mix of housing types.
- Some projects are intentional, like the Loop trail and Symphony Park renovations, which SouthPark Community Partners is behind.
- Other changes are market-driven, like ongoing office conversions and company relocations.
3. Charlotte private equity firm acquires Wemby-backed BARCODE
Axum Capital Partners, a Charlotte-based private equity firm, is acquiring controlling interest in BARCODE, the hydration brand backed by NBA All-Star Victor Wembanyama.
The big picture: Former Carolina Panthers player Muhsin Muhammad II is a co-founder and managing partner of Axum, which launched a $300 million fund focused on food and beverage companies fostering health and wellness last fall.
- Axum is also an investor in Charlotte-based Clean Juice, Le Botaniste in New York City and Belgium, Texas-based Salata Salad Kitchen and California-based VitaHustle.
The latest: BARCODE's deal with Axum is expected to close in the next couple of months.
Context: Former Lakers star Kyle Kuzma and former Knicks and Los Angeles Lakers director or performance Mubarak Malik co-founded BARCODE in 2021.
- Wembanyama became the face of the brand in 2023 when he was drafted No. 1 overall by the San Antonio Spurs. The team announced the brand as their "exclusive performance water" in 2024.
