Our hearts go out to the friends and families of WBTV meteorologist Jason Myers and helicopter pilot Chip Tayag, who were killed yesterday in a helicopter crash.

Details: The wreck occurred alongside the southbound lanes of I-77 near Nations Ford Road, about five miles north of the South Carolina line, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police confirmed.

• Myers and Tayag were the only people on board.

"That pilot is a hero in my eyes, to make sure that the safety and security of those that were driving on the road was not in jeopardy,” CMPD Chief Johnny Jennings said during a press briefing.

• The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.

Dilworth Neighborhood Grille is not moving, despite the fact that its property on East Morehead is being rezoned.

• Owner Matt Wohlfarth tells Axios’ Katie Peralta Soloff that the building's landlord hired Keith Corp to get their original zoning back, which the city changed as part of the 2040 plan.

Why it matters: DNG is a beloved neighborhood restaurant and bar that’s been around since 2004.

• In a city with new bars and restaurants opening all the time, longstanding ones like DNG are increasingly hard to come by.

Chip and Jason were cut from the same cloth. They were two of the nicest people I had the pleasure of working with during my time at WBTV.

Chip helped me fulfill a lifelong dream of riding inside a helicopter, and the view of the Charlotte skyline from above is a memory I'll always cherish. The fact that I can share it with you in this newsletter is all thanks to him.

• Chip was an experienced pilot of more than 20 years, and while I struggled with the camera equipment he had taught me how to operate, his steady hands, composure, experience and calmness made me think: Hey, I can do this.
• My thoughts are with his family, especially his wife, whom he recently married.

As for Jason, you can thank him for all of our weather updates. He was my go-to weather guy and always answered my calls with a cheery "How's it going?"

• I'm comforted knowing Jason's family has a strong sense of faith, which I know they're leaning heavily on right now.
