1 big thing: Data center debate
Charlotte City Council could move toward a temporary pause tomorrow on new data centers amid growing resident concerns over noise, water use and electricity demand.
Why it matters: Some Charlotte leaders are antsy to take action on data centers — which require as much power as a small city — before more pop up without their approval or community input.
- "It's the wild, wild west," says council member Dimple Ajmera, who is asking for a 90-day pause on data center construction.
Case in point: Right now, data centers can be built "by right," without rezoning hearings, in multiple districts. Construction is already underway on the first of five two-story data centers in University City.
- "We really didn't have a say in this," University resident Antoinette Mingo tells Axios. "And I don't think Duke Energy or the builders were transparent as it relates to the impact on communities."
The other side: Duke Energy, which is actively courting data centers, says the facilities will help spread energy costs across the system in the long term.
- "Over time, that means more reliable service and lower costs than customers would otherwise face without that growth," the company said in a statement to Axios.
Between the lines: A zoning petition from American Tower is one of the rare instances in Charlotte where city approval is required.
2. NCDOT: What I-77 elevated lanes could look like
The N.C. Department of Transportation released renderings to show local leaders what elevated I-77 toll lanes running through Charlotte would look like.
Why it matters: On top of displacement and environmental and equity concerns, aesthetics is a frequent criticism of the project. This is NCDOT's way of saying, "Look, it isn't that bad."
- Their consultants also stressed this week that the project is needed to reduce the corridor's high crash rate, telling reporters to focus more on commuters than "responding to sensationalism."
What's next: Charlotte City Council is expected to take up a resolution tomorrow on the controversial project, potentially asking for a halt on "irreversible" work.
- Some council members want time to explore transportation solutions beyond toll lanes for managing growth.
