Why it matters: Charlotte, like much of the nation, is working to keep up with the demand for pickleball courts. Plus, there's a growing appetite for places to play, hang out and grab a bite or a drink, too.

How it works: A pickleball court reservation costs $20 per hour Monday-Friday from 7am-5pm. It costs $40 per hour Monday-Friday from 5pm until close and all day Saturday and Sunday. You can bring your own paddles and balls or rent one for $5 per paddle (your rental includes pickleballs). You can also buy a paddle (prices vary). A court reservation accommodates eight people.

• A golf simulator reservation costs $45 per hour Monday-Friday from 7am-5pm. It costs $65 per hour Monday-Friday from 5pm until close and all day Saturday and Sunday.
• Pool tables cost $15 per hour. Shuffleboard, darts and arcade games are free.

Charlotte will get to experience the irrepressible Dolly Parton's latest project later this year.

State of play: "Dolly Parton's Threads: My Songs in Symphony" is billed as a night of multimedia storytelling, with Parton appearing on screen to guide audiences through her life and her greatest hits, backed by lush strings, brass and woodwinds.

• The orchestrations promise to present Parton's music at an appropriately grand scale, befitting of Music City royalty.

What's next: The show will debut on March 20 with the Nashville Symphony, before touring.

• Charlotte Symphony is among the participating orchestras and will perform two shows on Oct. 17 and 18. Tickets are not yet available.
