1 big thing: Inside the reopening of Jail North
Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden is almost ready to reopen Jail North after it sat largely unused for nearly four years.
Why it matters: Charlotte's sole jail in Uptown is about 400 people over capacity right now, raising safety concerns.
- That means in common areas, 25-30 people are sleeping side-by-side on cots rather than in private cells, McFadden describes. More than 80 people are sharing about six showers. And a sole guard is patrolling the room, where nights are noisy.
Reality check: When the second detention center reopens in north Charlotte, the sheriff's office will move about 150-200 people to start, meaning about 200 "residents" — as McFadden calls them — will remain sleeping, essentially, on the floor.
Inside Jail North on Thursday, pods were set up and ready for the first arrivals. Papers next to beds identified who would move into each room, and there was a bag on each bed with hygiene items waiting for them.
- "All we did is dust it off and wipe it down," McFadden said of the facility during a tour with Axios.

- McFadden pointed out that medical supplies were stocked, the control room was ready to operate and the floors were impeccably shiny. He says he wants to see his reflection.
What's next: For security reasons, the sheriff's office isn't saying when Jail North will officially open.

2. 🏟️ College football crowds boom
College football's top tier is on track to set an attendance record of 39 million this season.
Why it matters: Total attendance at Football Bowl Subdivision games last season was just a few big games short of California's population.
Pre-pandemic crowds are back (up 3.7 million since 2021) across FBS games, and then some, according to NCAA data.
- College football attendance at all levels nearly hit 50 million in 2024.
Zoom in: The Charlotte 49ers averaged 13,564 fans per home game in 2025, according to D1.ticker. That's 89% of Jerry Richardson Stadium's listed 15,314-seat capacity and down 4% from 2024.
What we're watching: The 49ers are in the midst of a $70 million football stadium expansion that will add roughly 3,000 seats, including a new tower with premium seating. The project is expected to wrap up ahead of the 2027 season.
What's next: The 49ers host the Citadel on Saturday, Sept. 5, at 3:30pm to open the regular season. Tickets start at $20.24.
