AMINA, a new restaurant bringing East African and Mediterranean–inspired flavors to Uptown, is set to open early next month.
Why it matters: The menu is led by Charlotte native chef Chianti Peek, who has cooked for high-profile clients including former Panthers player Cam Newton and former Hornets player Kemba Walker, among others.
The focus is now on introducing bold East African flavors to the local dining scene while keeping the menu approachable.
Dig in: Expect seasonal menus infused with Ethiopian and Eritrean spices like berbere and korarima — some locally sourced, others sourced internationally.
The menu will feature shareable dishes like oxtail sliders and flatbreads, and plant-based options, along with playful touches such as an "adult Happy Meal." Brunch is slated to launch this spring.
Sip on this: The rotating cocktail menu featuring 12 drinks will be inspired by the menu's spices — including a black lemon drop — plus five mocktails, two dessert cocktails, and an extensive, seasonally changing wine list.
What's next: AMINA is expected to openat 225 E. 6th St., near Imperial, in early February.
The Queen City Grits kind of eats in my opinion. Just imagine all the food related puns you can say. I might need to rock some merch when I'm beating my opponents in air hockey. Photo: Courtesy of Charlotte Checkers
The Charlotte Checkers will rebrand as the Queen City Grits today.
Why it matters: Their "What If?" themed night imagines what could've happened if a local fan's suggestion — Grits — had won the team's original naming contest in the 1950s.
What to expect: A variety of games like pinball, Guitar Hero, air hockey, Skee Ball, basketball hoops and more.
There isn't an official drink menu yet, but you can order cocktails and beer at the bar. Seating includes bar stools, lounge seating and tables for hanging out between games.
