1 big thing: Three in custody after shootings
A string of 12 shootings over 24 hours terrorized residents in the Austin area over the weekend.
Driving the news: Authorities said a 15-year-old and a 17-year-old were taken in custody yesterday afternoon, and a third juvenile suspect was detained by Manor police last night.
- At least four people were shot. One suffered serious injuries, and the others sustained minor injuries, police said.
The latest: The two teenage suspects who were caught first used stolen guns and stole four vehicles, Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said during a briefing yesterday evening.
- From around 3:45pm Saturday until late yesterday afternoon, police received 20 calls related to the two suspects, who fired their weapons toward apartment buildings, homes, people standing in front of stores, and at a man walking his dog, according to Davis.
- The suspects also shot at two fire stations — Station 26 in East Austin around 9pm Saturday and Station 32 in Southwest Austin around 10:50am yesterday, Davis said. No injuries were reported at either station.
- Davis said the two suspects would be placed in juvenile detention.
What they're saying: "These are dangerous kids, out causing havoc in this city," Davis told reporters yesterday. "They had to be taken into custody, and they were — safely," Davis said.
Zoom in: Austin police issued a shelter-in-place order from roughly 3:30 to 4:30pm yesterday for residents in an area roughly bounded by Ben White Boulevard, Slaughter Lane, McKinney Falls Parkway and Escarpment Boulevard.
- Manor police and officers from other agencies stopped one of the stolen vehicles, police said.
- Three suspects ran from the car. Davis said two of them, who were seen on video footage tied to the shooting incidents around the city, were captured by law enforcement soon after.
- A third suspect escaped on foot but was later detained by Manor police around 9pm yesterday. Authorities have not said how that suspect might have been involved in the shootings.

3. Five questions with Midland's Jess Carson
Country trio Midland's roots trace back to Dripping Springs dive bars.
Driving the news: The Hill Country-born group — Mark Wystrach, Jess Carson and Cameron Duddy — will perform at The American Rodeo Championship in Arlington on Saturday.
We caught up with lead guitarist Jess Carson ahead of the show to talk about their early days, new music and rodeo.
This interview has been lightly edited and condensed for clarity.
Midland was formed in Dripping Springs. What's one specific memory from those early days that still shows up in your music today?
"Those early days in Dripping Springs were pretty simple in the best way. We were playing hole-in-the-wall dive bars where everyone was close to the stage and really listening.
- A lot of our songs still come from that place, just telling stories about the kind of people and moments we grew up around in Texas."
How does your upcoming single reflect how your sound has evolved since those early Dripping Springs days?
"I think the new music still carries that same spirit we had early on, but we have grown a lot as a band since then.
- We have spent years touring and writing together, so the sound feels more confident now. It still feels like Midland, just the next chapter of it."
📍 If you go: Tickets to their Saturday show are still available and start around $128.
