New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Wednesday that Yankees and Mets baseball games will reopen regular seating for fully vaccinated people starting May 19, and will offer free tickets to those who choose to get a vaccine at the game.

Details: Cuomo said that unvaccinated people will also be welcome at the games, but they will be in a different section where spectators will be seated 6 feet apart with masks. The unvaccinated sections will operate at 33% capacity.

  • The one-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine will be administered right outside the stadium, according to Cuomo.
  • There will be no testing upon entry to the stadium. People will need to present proof of vaccination, such as the Excelsior Pass, to sit in the vaccinated section.
  • Children under 16 will be allowed to accompany those already vaccinated.

The big picture: Cuomo also announced that Broadway shows will reopen at 100% capacity on Sept. 14, and that tickets will go on sale starting Thursday. The news comes days after Cuomo said most coronavirus restrictions will be lifted in New York on May 19, now that 36% of the state's adults have been fully vaccinated.

Two days into school year, 440 students in a Florida district are quarantined

Nearly 500 students in Palm Beach County, Florida, have been quarantined because of COVID-19 just two days into the school year, the district's superintendent said Thursday.

Why it matters: Superintendent Michael Burke's announcement comes as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has maintained his executive order banning school districts in the state from requiring the use of masks amid criticism and lawsuits.

The Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have both recommended that certain immunocompromised people receive a third dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine.

Why it matters: Data suggest that people with weakened immune systems don't generate strong enough levels of protection against the virus with just two doses, but a third dose could significantly help.

Over 800 physicians call on DeSantis to repeal anti-mask order in schools

More than 800 physicians signed a letter on Thursday calling on Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to repeal an executive order that prohibits local officials from requiring masks in school.

Driving the news: The Republican governor is threatening to withhold pay from superintendents and school board members who mandate face masks in schools, even as Florida experiences a surge in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations driven by the Delta variant.
