New York decriminalizes marijuana use

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a bill Monday to decriminalize marijuana use in the state. Under the law, use could still result in a fine, but will not be considered a criminal offense that could result in prison time.

The big picture: New York joins 15 other states that have decriminalized. 11 states plus Washington D.C. have legalized marijuana.

Bernie Sanders unveils sweeping criminal justice reform plan

Sen. Bernie Sanders on Sunday revealed a 6,000-word proposal for overhauling the criminal justice system, timed to coincide with the Democratic presidential candidate's 2-day trip to South Carolina.

The big picture: Sanders' sweeping plan, titled "Justice and Safety for All," promises to transform the criminal justice system in the U.S. by ending "profiteering" by corporations, reforming police and prison systems, investing in communities, and ending mass incarceration, among many other things.

Dayton shooter's friend admits to purchasing gear used in attack

24-year-old Ethan Kollie has admitted to buying body armor, a high-capacity magazine and an accessory for the gun used by Connor Betts, who killed 9 people in a mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio, earlier this month. Kollie was arrested by the FBI for lying on a federal firearms form he used to buy his own handgun.

The big picture: Federal court documents unsealed Monday do not indicate that Kollie intentionally planned or was involved in the shooting. Kollie told authorities, however, that he stored the accessories he bought for Betts at his house, where he watched and helped Betts assemble the AR-15 used in the shooting "approximately 10 weeks ago." He said he kept the gear at his own house to help hide it from Betts' parents.
