New York City will announce requirements Wednesday for health workers in city-run hospitals and clinics to get vaccinated or weekly testing, per the New York Times.

Why it matters: Though Mayor Bill de Blasio has dragged his feet on mandating coronavirus vaccinations, the Delta variant has ushered in fear amid a third wave of new cases. The new policy is likely to cover over 10% of the 300,000 people who work for city government.

Of note: The mandate will go into effect at the beginning of August, but employees will have until Aug. 1 to apply for exemptions and Sept. 1 to get a first dose.

What they're saying: "It's all about the safety of a health care setting," Bill Neidhardt, the mayor's press secretary, told the Times.

The big picture: About 2 million adult New Yorkers have not received a single dose of any coronavirus vaccine, per the Times.

  • Every day, fewer than 10,000 NYC residents on average are choosing to get their first shot. Black and Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods in particular have lower vaccination rates.
  • The Delta variant has led case counts to jump to nearly 600 a day in the past week, more than double the daily average in late June, according to the Times.

Around 65% of Philadelphia city employees vaccinated

Roughly 65% of the city's employees are fully vaccinated, as of Tuesday — below the city average of 71%.

  • Vaccination rates by department will be released later Thursday.

Why it matters: It's been almost two months since Philly's early September deadline for its workers to get vaccinated passed. Yet up until last week, only a third had shown proof of vaccination.

DeSantis sues Biden administration over contractor vaccine mandate

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday announced a lawsuit against the Biden administration's order requiring federal contractors to be vaccinated against the coronavirus no later than Dec. 8.

Why it matters: This is the Republican governor's latest attempt to undermine federal vaccine requirements, with the lawsuit alleging that such measures are a "radical intrusion on the personal autonomy" of U.S. workers.

Vaccine benefits outweigh risks for kids, scientists say

Polls suggest some parents are hesitant to vaccinate their young children against COVID-19, but the benefits outweigh the risks, several infectious disease doctors tell Axios.

The latest: The FDA and CDC may soon authorize Pfizer's lower-dose vaccine for that age group, with Moderna close to also seeking approval. NIAID director Anthony Fauci says he's "excited" about the possibility of broadening possible protection for 28 million more Americans.
